Frontera Audubon Center

A natural urban jewel tucked in the South Texas town of Weslaco, the 15 acre site offers opportunities for birders, butterfliers and all those interested in the wonders of nature and biodiversity.

Five miles from the Rio Grande and Mexico, this 15 acre site offers opportunities to watch great wildlife in action. In addition to our Visitors’ Center with Gift Shop and Meeting Room, Frontera is working to renovate a large Mediterranean-style home on the property for future use as a community meeting/gathering place.

Lesser Goldfinches breed in the sunflowers behind the headquarters, and a wetland that has been developed on the property attracts large numbers of Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks and shorebirds. Green Parakeets have nested in cavities in the dead trees bordering the pond, and Red-crowned Parrots roost in old trees in the immediate neighborhood. Few places in the Valley are more populated with Plain Chachalacas, with birds calling from the roofs of neighborhood homes each morning. In migration this thicket is among the better spots to see neotropical migrants away from the coast.

Some of the amazing birds sighted here are:

Plain Chachalaca, Turkey Vulture, Red-shouldered Hawk, Inca Dove, White-tipped Dove, Red-crowned Parrot, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Eastern Phoebe, Great Kiskadee, White-eyed Vireo, Blue-headed Vireo, Green Jay, Black-crested Titmouse, Carolina Wren, House Wren, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Northern Mockingbird, Long-billed Thrasher, Orange-crowned Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, Wilson’s Warbler, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Northern Cardinal, Pyrrhuloxia, Altamira Oriole and Lesser Goldfinch
